The company began producing Hakata Dolls in 1933 and still continues to make the 400-year-old traditional craft Chikuzen Hakata dolls today. The company has an exhibition corner. It is a famous location in Hakata where visitors can truly experience the master craftsmanship of the dolls’ artisans.

Located in the center of Fukuoka City, this oasis of relaxation provides a space of healing for citizens. The 50 sakura trees that grow along the Yakuin Shinkawa River include cultivars such as the Yoshino Cherry and Japanese Flowering Cherry, creating a cherry blossom tunnel.

This municipal facility complex was established in 1995 in the old Fukuoka Prefecture area as an “International, Cultural and Information Exchange Center.” Located next to Tenjin Central Park and surrounded by nature, it’s treated as an oasis within the city. Concerts are often held in the Fukuoka Symphony Hall.

04Kego Shrine

This shrine deifies three gods: the god of calamity, “Yasomagatsuhi-no-kami” who brings danger, and those that ward off danger and seek out virtue, “Kamunaohi-no-kami” and “Ohnaohi-no-kami”. They guard against impurity, sickness and disaster in daily life, and provide direction on one’s path. Imaeki Inari Shrine is also located within the grounds, which deifies “Uka-no-Mitama-no-kami,” the god of food, clothing, and housing that protects agriculture and business. Sitting in front of the altar are fox statues with smiling and laughing face, which are rare even in Japan.

These zoological and botanical gardens house about 120 animal species and about 1,260 plant species, while the greenhouse includes a further 900 plant species. The zoo and botanical garden areas are separated, it is possible to travel freely between them. It is also a well-known sakura spot, located in the center of the city.

Even among the 2,129 Sumiyoshi shrines throughout Japan, this shrine is considered to be the first Sumiyoshi shrine in Japan. It is often referred to as “Sumiyoshi-Honsha” (Sumiyoshi Main Shrine) or “Nihon-Daiichi-Sumiyoshi-no-Miya (Japan First Sumiyoshi Shrine).” It deifies the three gods “Sokotsutsunoo-no-mikoto,” “Nakatsutsunoo-no-mikoto,” and “Uhatsutsunoo-no-mikoto,” which all provide protection from calamity. The Noh Hall built within the grounds is also a historical building, considered to be a tangible cultural property of the Fukuoka City.

The center was established in 1909 as the Nippon Life Insurance Company Kyushu Branch and was used as a Museum of Historical Materials after that, but in 1994 it was opened as the Red Brick Culture Center. A special feature is the use of late-19th Century English-style red bricks and white granite for the outer walls. The interior can be rented out as a meeting room or exhibition space.

Built over 7 years, the feudal lord Kuroda Nagamasa used the castle as the headquarters of the Chikuzen Fukuoka Han. With a wide area of about 2,460,000㎡ which included Kakunodate Samurai Residences below the castle, it was also known as Maizuru Castle. It has since been decreed a historical site by the Japanese government and is now used as a park. The Cyperus ohwii around the moat, decreed a Natural Monument by the prefectural government, also is a natural relaxation area.

The Hakata Bay inlet, once used as an outer moat for Fukuoka castle, was opened in 1929 as Ohori Park. With a total area of 398,000㎡, this waterside park includes a lake that spans about 226,000㎡. A small island floats on the lake, and a Japanese garden and forest of wild birds can be found inside the park, making it perfect for a rest.

The sochinju (local Shinto deity) of Hakata is popularly known as “Okushida-san.” It deifies the three gods “Ohatanushi-no-Mikoto,” “Amaterasu-Okami,” and “Susanoo.” Even in ancient history, they have always been considered the collective tutelary gods of Hakata. The sacred ginkgo tree is a symbol of long life.

Built-in 1989, it is the tallest seaside tower in Japan, standing at 234 meters high. The top floor features an observation room with a 360-degree panorama view of the area. The tower hosts a range of restaurants and entertainment floors, and the seasonal illuminations attract many spectators.

Along with “Kitano Tenmangu Shrine” in Kyoto, “Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine” is one of the main Tenmangu shrines in Japan, deifying the famous scholar Sugawara no Michizane. There are many areas where history can be felt within the grounds, such as “Josui Shrine” where Kuroda Kanbei spent his retirement or the “Kirin Statues” that were donated by merchants in the Tokugawa period. Kobayagawa Takakage contributed the “Gokensha-Zukuri” to the current main hall in Tensho 19 (1591), which is an Important Cultural Property of Japan.

The Kyushu National Museum is the 4th national museum of Japan, after those in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Nara. Learn about the formation of Japanese culture from the Paleolithic era to the late Tokugawa era, based on the concept of “Understanding the formation of Japanese culture from the perspective of Asian history.” Besides Kanou Masanobu’s national treasure “Zhou Maoshu Appreciating Lotuses,” many important cultural properties are on display in addition to the occasional special exhibitions. There is free admission to the Asian Culture Experience area “Ajippa” on the 1st floor.

“Momochi Seaside Park” is an artificial seaside park that stretches out across the coast to the north of Fukuoka Tower. The white sand beach continues for roughly 2.5 kilometers and is known as a haven for beach sports such as beach volleyball and soccer. The centrally-located Marizon complex is a facility made up of restaurants and wedding halls, and more. With the option to enjoy the lights of the city shining on the ocean at night, this has become a prominent date spot in Fukuoka, both during the day and at night.

The Fukuoka PayPay Dome is a multipurpose domed stadium with a retractable roof. With a building area of 69,130㎡, and the highest point being at 83.96m above ground on the 7th floor, this domed stadium is the largest of its kind in Japan.
